Afrikahaus was built as the headquarters of C. WOERMANN by Martin Haller in 1899 and became a historic landmark in 1972. Martin Haller is known to be one of the most formative Hamburg architects at the turn of the century, influencing Hamburg’s cityscape vastly by building several mansions and warehouses as well as the town hall. Inspired by Afrikahaus’ vicinity to the harbour and Gröninger Fleet, Haller used the artistic design of the facade to underline the overseas trading connections of C. WOERMANN. The result is a unique example of Hamburg architecture with an international background. To this day Afrikahaus is family owned and rented out to several companies.
